Oneplus 5T and Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+ are the big budget smartphones which provides best user experience. OnePlus differs from all other smartphone manufacturers. It produces only one model at a time and can concentrate all its forces there. The latest device from the Chinese manufacturer was OnePlus 5T, which came out six months after the previous device and received a frameless screen, a new camera, a front-end version and a number of other features.
As this is a smartphone on the Android platform, it makes sense to compare it with the best flagship models Galaxy S8 and S8 +. Samsung devices are much more expensive, but can you say they are much better?
Comparing Designs of Oneplus 5T and Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+
In terms of design, the South Korean manufacturer is developing seven-league steps. S8 and S8 + are elegant futuristic devices made of glass and metal. OnePlus is not going to lag behind either. Although there is no common rear surface of glass, there is a slight bend, thanks to which the device lies in the hand more naturally than Samsung smartphones. The aluminum case is sturdy, the metal does not collect as many fingerprints as the S8. On the other hand, the back surface of OnePlus is very slippery.
As for the sizes, the Chinese device is slightly wider than its competitors, so working with it with one hand is not so simple, but it is not as long as the S8 +.
In terms of convenience, OnePlus has several advantages. Firstly, the case has a switch for turning off the sound, which is called Alert Slider. Although all these smartphones have a fingerprint scanner on the back, on the Galaxy it is located uncomfortably right next to the camera. At OnePlus the scanner is in the center, which makes it easy to reach it and not to dirty the lens.
Both phones have analog headphone jacks, which today does not boast of all smartphones. What Galaxy has an advantage, so it’s in protection from water. Here, the rating is IP68, which means that you can survive the dive for a half meter for half an hour. OnePlus can only offer splash protection.
Screen Comparison Oneplus 5T and Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+
The screen is one of the main components by which high-end smartphones stand out. In this case, the devices do not disappoint their owners. There are some differences between them. OnePlus 5T has an AMOLED screen with a diagonal of 6 inches and a resolution of 1080 x 2600. The S8 received a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2960. The same resolution for the S8 + screen with a diagonal of 6.3 inches.
Samsung Galaxy S8Although the resolution of Samsung smartphones is higher, by default it is set to a lower value and the pixel density corresponds to the OnePlus screen. Of course, the resolution can be increased in the settings, but it’s unlikely that you will notice a big difference in the level of sharpness, so it’s better to leave everything as is for the sake of saving energy.
Thanks to the frameless screen, the 5T is almost as good as the ratio of its area to the size of the case. There are no bends along the edges, which some seem to be a more practical solution. A flat screen is more convenient for viewing.
However, colors are much more important. On all three screens they are juicy and alive. The user will see a deep black color, excellent contrast and a high level of saturation. You can change the color profiles if you want to choose between natural colors and more vivid. For example, the basic mode on Galaxy devices corresponds to the color standard sRGB. There is it on the device OnePlus. For some, this range seems natural, but for someone too dull.
The OnePlus 5T has the same problem as its predecessor, in the automatic mode the brightness of the screen is too low compared to other smartphones. Some people are annoyed.
User Interface of Oneplus 5T and Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+
The three smartphones work on Android 7, but the shells are different. The system on OnePlus devices is known as OxygenOS. It’s a clean interface that looks like the Android version for Android, there are all Google apps and only a few settings have been added.
On Samsung smartphones, the changes are traditionally much more, here the shell is called Samsung Experience. A lot of add-ons slows performance, many Samsung applications perform the same functions as Google programs, taking up too much memory.
These smartphones can be criticized for the previous version of Android, pending the update until 2018.
The screen of all three frameless, so instead of physical navigation buttons used software. Galaxy smartphones have an invisible touch zone at the bottom of the screen, pressing it works the same way as the “Home” button. It works in any application, even in full screen mode. OnePlus has such a useful feature.
5T in some places seems obsolete: they include the usual series of notifications, not the best weather app and a number of other nuances. The Galaxy interface is more modern, from the quick setup panel to the system settings screen, to the keyboard and to all other sites. On the other hand, this interface works much more slowly and stumbles often. This problem is not observed on Samsung smartphones for the first time.

An outstanding feature of the S8 and S8 + is the support of the DeX docking station, which is sold separately. If you put the smartphone inside, you can connect it to a monitor or a TV, work with the keyboard and mouse, that is to say that the smartphone will become an analogue of a personal computer. Other manufacturers also tried to do something similar, but Samsung turned out to be better, but not perfectly. Despite this, the docking station is well suited for input, viewing, photos, video, Skype, etc.
Facial Unlock Against Fingerprint Scanners
All three smartphones support a facial recognition system along with a fingerprint scanner, but the OnePlus 5T in this sense is much better. The system is faster and more reliable, just look at the smartphone and you will be able to enter the home screen or the lock screen if you specify it in the settings. Samsung’s solution is much slower and not so reliable, especially in the dark.
In any case, the unlock will not be compared with the fingerprint scanner. Therefore, only it is used for financial settlements in the payment systems Android Pay and Samsung Pay. On the OnePlus, it’s much easier to reach the scanner, it’s faster and more reliable, whereas on the Galaxy it often incorrectly reads the imprint, because it’s in an uncomfortable position.
Samsung Bixby vs. Google Assistant
Six months after its appearance, the voice assistant Bixby was almost forgotten. There is an opinion that Google Assistant is faster, knows more and gives more coherent answers, whereas the Samsung assistant has difficulties with the recognition of commands and less knowledge.
As a result, a separate button to launch it on the S8 and S8 + seems to be wasting space. On the left side of the smartphone OnePlus there is a sound switch, which is more useful in everyday work.
Performance and storage
In 2017, all the flagship smartphones came out on the Snapdragon 835 processor and the models in question were no exception. However, the difference in software greatly affects the speed of work. Six months after its appearance, the Galaxy machines were sluggish, often slowing down, at least by the standards of the flagships, while the 5T gracefully and quickly copes with scrolling of pages and screens. The contrast is very large, but benchmarks will not show this, because the results there are almost identical. In real life, the difference is overwhelming.
The OnePlus is available in versions with 64 and 128 GB of memory, microSD cards are not supported. Galaxy smartphones received 64 GB, you can install a memory card.
Cameras of Oneplus 5T and Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+
Although the 5T has a dual camera with resolutions of 16 and 20 megapixels, this does not mean that the quality of photos is higher compared to a single 12 MP camera on Galaxy smartphones.
In bright daylight the results are comparable and at a high level. Galaxy produces sharper images with high detail, although the colors are slightly supersaturated. The details on the photos are 5T below, the shadows turn out to be underexposed. In general, the difference is small.
It becomes more obvious under low light. Although the second camera on the 5T is designed specifically for such situations, it is almost never used. In order for it to enter into business, the illumination should be below 10 lux, it is very small. At night, the detail on the 5T drops significantly, the pictures are smeared out. Galaxy smart phones are much better, images are clear and clear even at night. Also on Samsung smartphones, focus works better and faster.
The front camera on the 5T has a resolution of 16 megapixels, on the Galaxy 8 megapixel. In daylight, the difference is again not obvious, but with the deterioration of the Galaxy, clearer images are produced.
All three smartphones are capable of recording video at a resolution of up to 4K at 30 frames per second, but there is a difference in quality. In short, the 5T video is not impressive. The colors are dim, autofocus works slower than average and is not very reliable, when moving a lot of artifacts.
Apparatus Galaxy themselves in terms of video are not ideal. The image is too sharp and the colors are oversaturated, but overall the quality is better. The focus is very fast, the detail is high.
On Galaxy smartphones, the only speaker is at the bottom of the case, it can be called normal, although compared to a 5T speaker, it’s simply bad.
On the Chinese smartphone, the speaker is also one and also below, but the sound is much more clear and spatial, as far as possible on the smartphone. If you watch a video and want to get a good sound, if you listen to music through the speaker, then evaluate the quality.
Of course, headphones or external speakers further improve the sound quality. All these smartphones have a headphone jack, so you can use them without adapters.
The duration of the autonomous work of smartphones this year was gradually improving, which is noticeable with these three devices. The capacity of the OnePlus 5T battery is 3300 mAh, the S8 3000 mAh, and the S8 + 3500 mAh.
The duration of battery life is comparable, but OnePlus is not much of a leader. Apparatus with an average load can work throughout the day, with even less workload they will work a day and a half, but up to two days will not last.
All three smartphones were considered at the same level of screen brightness in typical tasks. 5T stretched 8 hours 51 minutes, S8 8 hours 22 minutes, S8 + 8 hours.
Also do not forget about the speed of recharging. Samsung uses Adaptive Fast Charging technology, when both OnePlus has a luxurious standard Dash Charge. They are fast, but they work in different ways. OnePlus uses high amperage and the recharging speed does not slow down, even if you are currently working with a smartphone. Samsung uses high voltage and when using the smartphone, the charging speed decreases.
As a result, 5T charges faster than competitors. From zero to maximum, it took 1 hour 33 minutes, while Samsung smartphones managed in about 1 hour and 40 minutes. But the Galaxy has a wireless charging, unlike the 5T.
There were no problems with the quality of telephone conversations on three smartphones. The sound is pretty clean and loud.
Smartphones Galaxy S8 in Russia are sold in the spring, 5T still have to go to stores, but you can not doubt that the latter will be cheaper. If you do not pay attention to prices, these devices have strong distinctive features.
Galaxy models have a frameless screen with rich colors, a fast camera with better photos and video, protection from water and dust, wireless charging. On the other hand, Galaxy is slower, there is a slowdown in the interface.
5T is one of the fastest smartphones on Android. It uses an attractive interface and a good screen, especially impressive fast recharging Dash Charge. There are drawbacks to the camera, although it is not bad, but inferior to the Galaxy camera.
If you need speed and you do not take photos very often, the OnePlus smartphone will be the best choice. If you are willing to tolerate a slower smartphone, but want an excellent camera, protection from water and wireless charging, you should give preference to one of the two Galaxy S8 if you can pay more for it.
