MIUI, short for MI User Interface, is a firmware for smartphones. It was developed by Xiaomi and supports other smartphones, OnePlus among them. The latest version is MIUI 10, which includes full-screen gestures, UI changes, and several other AI features.
The first thing you need to do is unlock the bootloader. For those unfamiliar with the expression, bootloader is essentially a code that runs before starting any operative system. Every device has its own bootloader. Bootloader is usually locked so you would keep using the phone companies OS. With the bootloader locked, you can’t flash Custom ROM, and trying to do that can render your phone useless, permanently turned off. So, if you want to install MIUI 10, you have to unlock the bootloader.
Next, if you want to modify your device, you’ll need a custom recovery. Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) provides an interface that allows you to install other firmware and is usually installed to Android devices when rooting them. Download TWRP and install it, but first, enable USB Debugging. To do that, go to Settings, then to Developer Options, and choose USB Debugging. TWRP will backup your system, in case you lose any information. If you run into any kind of bug, you can restore from a good backup.
Before installing MIUI 10, you need to download it. According to the developer, it is still in its beta stage. What are the necessary conditions for installing MIUI 10? First, you have to have a supported device, and OnePlus 5T is one. Do a full backup before flashing. The calendar and your contacts can be backed-up by syncing all your contacts with your Google Account. Do this by going to Settings, Accounts, Google, selecting your Gmail Account, and then choosing Enable Contacts Sync. The calendar, app, and all the data can be synced in a similar way.
To backup SMS, you will have to download an app, like SMS Backup and Restore. Open the app and choose “BACKUP”. Save the file to cloud storage. Now that you are done with the backup, charge your smartphone up to 80%. You are ready to install MIUI 10.
Move the MIUI 10 into the root of your phone’s internal memory. Now boot into Recovery. There are several methods to do this, and here’s the first one: turn off your phone, and with it turned off, hold the “Volume down” button and the “Power” button together at the same time. If this doesn’t work, use “Volume up” instead of “Volume down”. Options should appear, and you ought to select “Recovery”.
The second method is to download “Quick Boot” app, give it root permission, and choose Reboot into Recovery. The third option requires a computer. Plug your phone into your computer and go to Settings, About, Software Information, More, and tap the Build Number option until you see “Developer option enabled”. Go to Settings, Developer Option and then Enable USB Debugging. Install Fastboot and type “adb reboot recovery” in. Press enter and you are done. Before installing MIUI 10, wipe data using a TWRP recovery. Now you have MIUI 10 installed on OnePlus 5T.
